Rice Cooker Dilemma!

Help! I've spent a whole week trying to find a Rice Cooker. Now some of you might think, how does this topic fit into my blog. I was thinking the same thing, since I couldn't really figure out which Label to use for this post. One could say eating rice is a cultural thing for Asians, and I think most households in Asia have Rice Cookers, at least most modern households do. It's just a shame that I can't pick one of the nice Asian brands here in Europe, that I see on Kdramas, for a reasonable price. Instead I'm stuck with making a choice from the Amazons, Ebays and various Shopping malls available here in Germany.

The last time I bought a RC was when I moved to Germany nearly five years ago, and I just chose a small cheap one to use for a single household. It lasted for a good three years. Later on I used a bigger one, now for a two person household, but this also lasted around four to five years. Anyway, it was time to find a new one since both of them have packed up.

I must say finding a rice cooker has been a hassle, nearly as tedious as choosing a Washing machine or Dryer - but that's another story I might tell later. So I started off looking at reviews and tests on rice cookers, since these are usually reliable. But even that didn't help me make up my mind, because I didn't like any of them. Main point is there are two different types of lids, ones with glas that can be removed and ones that are attached and can't be removed (see the two pictures below). I ended up focusing on three things before making up my mind, 1. capacity 2. open glass lid and 3. steaming functionality.

At first I wanted to choose the attached type, but then I thought cleaning the lid would definitely become problematic for me, and from the choices I had the capacity was too much for a two person household. I finally ended up choosing the open lid type for our household, the Russell Hobbs Cook @ Home Rice Cooker and Steamer 19750-56. It also had good reviews in tests for 2014. Whether or not this was the right choice, I don't know but I sure hope this one will last for a good while.
You can also check out pinterest for some interesting things to do with a rice cooker, other than cooking rice. I haven't tried any of them yet, but if you do let me know what works. Are you a rice eater, and do you have any thoughts on choosing a rice cooker?
